Address: 1301 Leitchfield Rd.
Built: Early 1870’s
Demolished: 2005
Felix Grimes came from Ireland to Pittsburgh, then Owensboro in 1867 and bought this property from a man who left town to go to California. He cut timber on the property about 1870 to build the two-story home. According to a Messenger-Inquirer article, it was a duplicate of his wife’s childhood home in Providence, RI. The NRHP documents state that it was a duplicate of the home Felix lived in in Pennsylvania. Two rooms were added to the back later and were used by the couple’s daughter, Sarah, as a private school from 1884-1890. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Grimes was a geologist and operated several mines located slightly south of his home. One of these mines were underneath the Greenwood Cemetery.
Felix also helped build the cotton mill and Catholic church in Cannelton, Indiana.
